Greatest Mosque of Tinmel

The Mosque of Tinmel is an architectural masterpiece located in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco. It is considered one of the greatest mosques in the country and holds great historical and cultural significance.

Built in the 12th century, exactly in 1153, the Tinmel Mosque served as a spiritual and educational center for the Almohad dynasty, who was an influential Islamic dynasty in North Africa and Spain(Al Andalus) during the medieval period.

The Tinmel Mosque is renowned for its stunning design and intricate details, which showcase the exceptional skill and craftsmanship of the artisans of that time. The mosque features intricate geometric patterns, carved woodwork, and beautiful calligraphy adorning its walls, ceilings, and arches. The use of local materials like bricks made of a mixture of gravel, soil, sand and lime, and traditional building techniques further adds to the mosque’s charm and authenticity.

As you explore the Tinmel Mosque, you will be captivated by its grandeur and architectural brilliance. The mosque is rectangular in plan: 48 meters wide from east to west and 43 meters long from north to south. The longitudinal axis of the plan is rotated twenty-three degrees counter-clockwise from the north-south meridian to account for qibla orientation. This degree of rotation is similar to that of other Almohad mosques constructed during the late twelfth century. This mosque is similar in its organization and proportion to the plans of other significant twelfth-century mosques, such as the Giralda at Seville (1172) or the Kutubiyya at Marrakesh (1147-1162), but at a smaller scale. The main prayer hall, with its high ceilings held by beautiful pointed arches creating 9 arcades in a spacious layout, provides a serene and peaceful atmosphere for worship. The minaret, towering 10 meters above the mosque, offers breathtaking views of the surrounding High Atlas Mountains, creating a truly awe-inspiring experience.

Located in the picturesque High Atlas Mountains, the Tinmel Mosque is surrounded by breathtaking natural landscapes. The rugged mountains, lush valleys, and flowing rivers create a stunning backdrop for the mosque, enhancing its beauty and creating a sense of tranquillity as well as intimacy since the mosque was once created by the Almuhads Khalifate “Abdu al Muamen ben Ali” in memory of the Almuhads leader “Al Mahdi ben Tumart” to lead important meetings to create a new empire. The Tinmel mosque played a crucial role in spreading the teachings and ideologies of the new movement so it was a space of worship to Allah, a parliament and a fortified castle at the same time. Tinmel Mosque is indeed the birthplace of the Islamic reform movement that had a profound impact on the history and development of Morocco. It was also a centre of learning and education that housed a library and a madrasa (school), where students would study various subjects including theology, law, and philosophy. The mosque was a hub of intellectual activity, attracting scholars and thinkers from far and wide.

Throughout the centuries, the Tinmel Mosque has witnessed the rise and fall of empires, the ebb and flow of civilizations, and the passing of time. Yet, it has remained a symbol of resilience and endurance, standing tall as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Morocco till the earthquake of Al Hawz in 2023.

Eight months after its restoration, the mosque faced the worst damage in its entire existence due to a 7-degree earthquake in the region of Al Hawz. A big part of the minaret has fallen as well as parts of some walls making it a big tragedy for the locals who lost their families, their homes as well as a monument that marked their whole life and their grandparents because the mosque used to serve as a symbol of unity and spirituality for these people living in the nearby villages who gather there for daily prayers and religious ceremonies.
