A Study in Craft, Memory and Contemporary Silhouette

With New Tangier, Re-Oriented continues the house’s exploration of Moroccan heritage through a distinctly contemporary lens. Founded by Tangier-born designer Kenza Bennani, the brand has consistently approached fashion as a dialogue between material memory and modern form. This new collection deepens that conversation with clarity and refinement.

Re-Oriented is built around the idea of representation, not as ideology, but as image-making. Drawing subtle inspiration from historical portrayals of Moroccan women, the collection reinterprets those references through a present-day aesthetic that feels grounded, architectural and deliberate. The result is a body of work that respects heritage while asserting a modern design language.

The Caftan as Architectural Form

At the heart of the collection is the caftan, treated not as a ceremonial costume but as a structured garment. New Tangier approaches it almost architecturally: proportion first, surface second. Silhouettes are clean and intentional. Volumes are carefully controlled. Ornamentation, rather than dominating, supports the construction.

The iconic Ambre model is revisited through coordinated silk weavings that create continuity between cut, drape and textile rhythm. The emphasis shifts from embellishment to integrity of form. The caftan becomes lighter in appearance yet stronger in presence, asserting itself through structure rather than excess.

Material as Narrative

Material plays a central role in Re-Oriented. The collection returns to foundational caftan textiles, particularly silk brocades woven with floral motifs and enriched with golden threads. These fabrics recall Morocco’s historical position within global textile routes, yet they are used with restraint. The brocades provide depth and luminosity without overwhelming the silhouette.

Jabador ensembles are reimagined in a purified vocabulary. Jackets and sarouals are stripped of heavy decoration, alternating between matte cotton surfaces and luminous silk brocades. This interplay between sobriety and richness defines the collection’s aesthetic balance. It is a study in contrast: texture against smoothness, weight against fluidity, tradition against minimalism.

Vegetable silk introduces a refined lightness. Its natural sheen supports a jewel-toned palette of sapphire blue, ruby red, emerald green and jasper beige. These tones bring chromatic intensity while maintaining the collection’s understated elegance. The color story enhances the structure rather than distracting from it.

Space and Atmosphere

The series was photographed at Dar Dmana, a historic residence built in 1901. The choice of setting reinforces the collection’s philosophy. Heritage is not used as décor but as atmosphere. Architectural textures—zellige, carved wood, filtered light—echo the richness of the textiles while allowing the silhouettes to remain contemporary and composed.

Six Tangier-based women appear in the series, each engaged in her own professional and creative field. Their presence anchors the garments in lived experience. They embody continuity between past and present, bringing authenticity and modern relevance to the collection without theatricality. The garments adapt to them, not the other way around.

New Tangier a Refined Vision of Moroccan Luxury

Since its founding in 2014, New Tangier has aimed to elevate Moroccan craftsmanship through a contemporary design grammar. Kenza Bennani’s international experience within European fashion houses informs her disciplined approach to construction and material. For her, luxury is not excess but precision—an understanding of fabric, proportion and gesture.

With Re-Oriented, the house affirms a clear vision: Moroccan dress, particularly the caftan, holds infinite potential for reinterpretation when treated with structural clarity and textile intelligence. The collection does not attempt to modernize tradition by distancing itself from it. Instead, it distills it.

For YAZ, Re-Oriented stands as a reminder that the future of Moroccan fashion lies in refinement rather than spectacle. Through thoughtful material selection, controlled silhouettes and an unwavering respect for craft, New Tangier offers a contemporary expression of heritage—measured, confident and enduring.
